St. Michaels Mount, Cornwall By Charles E. Brittan, Sr.

St. Michaels Mount, Cornwall

by Charles E. Brittan, Sr.

This artist (1837-1888) painted scenes of Cornwall in lower Britain. St. Michaelís Mount is an abbey on a rock just off the coast, far down the peninsula, which is isolated at high tide. For this reason, it is considered rather a sister structure to the fabulous Mont St. Michele in France. Purchased through a Maine auction house. The artist is also known for illustrating the book Lorna Doone by Blackmore (such as the Dulverton limited edition, 1910, London) which also took place in Cornwall.

Thereís No Place Like Home

by BM

circa 1930?

A very pretty and peaceful watercolor. The big question here is, What the heck is the dog running from? Probably used as a published illustration. A very unusual signature with BM within a very stylized red heart...sure wish I knew who it was.

Garden Bridge By Unknown

Garden Bridge

by Unknown

circa 1930

A pretty garden scene. Age estimated by the condition of the old matting, which was subsequently replaced.

Original art.

by Alfred Osso

A view of Heidelberg and Heidelberg castle from across the river. I have stood on the same spot to take photographs.

Watercolor; original art.

Castle and Cathedral By T. Guy

Castle and Cathedral

by T. Guy

circa 1930

A European scene with a castle in the foreground and a cathedral in the background. Perhaps Notre Dame in Paris on the Seine? Prior matting was quite old, giving some idea that this is a fairly old piece.

Watercolor; original art.

A Moonlight River View

by William Louis Sonntag Sr.

circa 1860?

Signed simply WS, this piece was purchased at a Maine auction. They did not remove the piece from glass and frame. It was not until we did, that we discovered the name William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900) on the back and a sticker from an earlier Christies auction. Sonntag is a recognized original member of the Hudson River school of art and we have a great large book of his works at our cabin, Blackthorne. He also is said to have studied in Europe. This, perhaps, represents our greatest art find.

Pastels; original art.
